How is it possible to relax a mask request? It is obviously not a law or a mandate nor should it be. Japan has the highest mask rate in the world yet has recorded the highest number of single-day cases. Perhaps the masks do not work. Perhaps they are exacerbating the problem. I don't wear one, despite the dirty looks I get. I also haven't gotten "vaccinated." Over the past 2 and half years, I have had nothing more than a sore throat and a slight cough.
Has anyone considered the negative long-term effects of mask wearing? I do not think it's a good idea to restrict one's breathing to avoid cold-like symptoms.
Of course masks are not a good idea at all for COVID. You are asking a rhetorical question at the end. It's been clearly proven by actual science not only that they do not work but that they cause a lot of physical and psychological harm.
As for your first question, Making Waves has already written about this many times in the past. The people need to wake up to the truth eventually and force their govt to follow the real science. Or perhaps the economic reality or external pressure from other countries will force the JP govt.
Agreed. Sometimes making someone, or, in this case, an entire country, look foolish has an effect. I have heard stories--unfortunately not enough--about Japanese nationals returning from abroad and questioning the mask silliness after experiencing freedom in other lands.
I wonder when this all blows over if those effected by the masks will be compensated.
Oh yeah; freedom is very powerful and I am sure many more open-minded Japanese travelling abroad and seeing the maskless reality must start to feel the great psychological difference it has on you and the whole society. I am Hungarian and when I came back to Japan in August from a 2-weeks visit to Hungary, I felt like coming back to a psychological prison. People are soo used to masks here in Japan that they simply can't understand anymore the incredible negative effects masks have on your psyche. That's why I don't have much hope for Japan to be honest; people are so conditioned here already, I don't believe they can ever stand up to become free. :'(
I wouldn’t get my hopes up about the foreign travelers *too* much. My close Japanese friend is relieved when we meet because he feels that around the company of a foreigner he’s finally free to take off his muzzle. He is more open minded as a fluent English speaker, and legitimately pretends to be a foreigner when we’re out and about to escape social pressures. Otherwise, he’s Japanese and will mask perpetually. It’s quite sad.
I know what you mean. I don't spend any time with maskers, only go to restaurants that don't follow this nonsense, and generally refuse to speak to people wearing masks because I can't understand what they are saying with the masks on. Actually, I can but don't want to communicate with someone who fell for and propagates the nonsense. It is sad. It's also pathetic.
I also do not have much hope for Japan. I do have hope for myself, though. And I live my life accordingly. No psych prison for me. I do think this mask nonsense will end, but, as you said, only through embarrassment. Whatever works. I am doing what I can. It keeps me sane and out of the "psych prison."
My final thoughts: In regard to these corrupt people in charge: The best way to destroy them is to outperform them. And that is a lot easier that people think.
I like your comments here and in the thread. I am from the UK and having been considered "extremely vulnerable" due to a cancer (mis)diagnosis by the NHS and having been in for treatment at the cancer clinic for at least two months of the so-called crisis without any masking requirement I realized it was all rubbish.
They tried to insist I wore a mask in June 2020 when it was blazing hot. I had an argument with the stupid medics who are pig ignorant. I did win eventually but what a waste of time.
Perhaps these might amuse you. I did them as much to wake people up as to relieve my frustrations in humour and ridicule.
I believe so. Perhaps people have trouble understanding the real meaning of words. For example, when a waiter recommends something at a restaurant, the real meaning is "I am pushing this because the ingredients are about to meet their expiration date." I think they pushed masks, etc. because profits were to be made. If you think about all the money that was made with masks alone, the amount could have ended poverty in several nations, if applied properly.
Yes, in theory but "CDC Recommendations" easily became mandates.
The US Federal government pushed state and local governments, school districts, and private employers to require masks. Fedeal legislation often conditioned funding on following CDC COVID recommendations.
Many people believed they were still required even when not thanks to our corporate media promoting them.
There seems to be a problem with the education system. If people know the laws and history, this would not have happened. I am not only referring to the US but also Japan. I have mentioned the Japanese term for civil disobedience to several people. They all had to ask what it meant.
Being foreign helps since the Japanese don’t expect much from you. The Japanese, on the other hand, are expected to do what other Japanese are doing and are thought of negatively if they don’t.
For sure. My wife hates wearing a mask and doesn't at all where we live (Switzerland), but she fell right back into the habit when we were there and was nagging me to wear one all the time. It's really much more about not being the peg that sticks up than about health. One of the great frustrations of living in Japan.
I was surprised that all of my gaijin friends there consistently wore one too. They evidently don't want to stand out either.
In an ideal world, it would not only be easy to sue officials for bad policy, but also to hold "experts" to account gor false or damaging statements made in public settings. People like Fauci or this Kitamura shouldn't be able to go on TV and run their mouths without expecting severe consequences for misleading viewers. I don't care if they're "just speculating" or "offering their opinion"-- when you claim the status of expert, you should weigh your words carefully.
The long-running scam of "If you get the jabs, you may get to unmask"
They used the same line in Australia, and of course, elsewhere,
In fact, when the injection milestones were reached, people in Queensland Australia burned their masks. Their Health Minister said not to, as they could be used for something in else in the future. Of course, later on the govt mandated masks..... and people did not even bother to remind her about her statement.
Here in western Sydney Australia there are handful who still masked outdoors and indoors - even where they were alone. No, they did not look Jap to me. In fact, I have not spoken to a Jap in over 15 years...
Yeah, I read it. As expected, Kitamura is also pushing the new drugs and jabs. Even by the low standards of Japanese TV's Covid experts, he is especially awful: "Masks are as important as pants", "Unvaccinated people have no immunity", etc. My general attitude at this point regarding recategorisation and unmasking is "I'll believe it when I see it."
Kitamura? Another person to put on the Crimes against Humanity list. I would like to see the mental gymnastics it would take to explain the "Masks are as important as pants" statement. "Unvaccinated people have no immunity"? There is more than enough evidence for natural immunity. My unmasked, unvaccinated self can attest to that. Finally, I would like to add that pushing new drugs and vaccines when others already existed, along with natural immunity, may be a violation of the Nuremberg Code. I hope he has a good lawyer.

Weren't mask mandates in the US also based on CDC "recommendation"?

Quite fair comment. In the UK all the so-called rules and regulations were guidance anyway. I did this to send it all up if you are interested.

I was there in August 2022 and often didn't wear a mask in shops etc. Nobody said anything. Maybe because I'm a gaijin?
I felt a special kinship with the few Japanese who didn't wear a mask.

I guess you've already read that news : https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/602ca5892badc18f74292d986f59101d3b220ad8
Japan will be forced to unmasked by the outside : in spring, Korea aand other countries will ditch their masks.
The situation won't last forever. It will last longer than in other places, but certainly not forever.
