This is a bit off topic but related to something you said in the article about China being Japan's greatest strategic challenge. Thinking about this, why would China invade or destroy japan, other than revenge for the Japanese occupation of China long ago (possible I suppose, but unlikely)? What does Japan have that China would want? A bunch of old people?
I agree this is just a political nonsense, and feel for JP travel/tourism operators. Although personally I have to say I don't mind the popular destinations here in Japan - to be free of the tourist hordes.
